Oregon Rebate Statement on Preliminary Election Results
PORTLAND – In response to the reported results on Measure 118, Oregon Rebate released the following statement:
“First and foremost, our deepest thanks for the hundreds and thousands of people who have supported and voted for this campaign. While we are disappointed in the outcome, we are not particularly surprised.
Oftentimes, Goliath beats David. In this case, the opposition to Measure 118 raised over $16 million to defeat it – more than 26 times what we raised. One thing is quite clear: If they didn’t believe Measure 118 could pass, they would not have burned through millions of dollars to fight it.
Measure 118, or the Oregon Rebate, came about in a unique way, written by everyday Oregonians instead of politicians or special interests. It was designed to disrupt who has the power to tax corporations and move our economy in a direction that works for all Oregonians. Just by getting on the ballot, we changed the conversation.
Oregonians overwhelmingly believe that corporations should start paying their fair share in taxes and that today’s economy is rigged against us. The Oregon Rebate gives Oregonians a chance to push back on giant corporations’ unconscionable price gouging to make record profits, so opponents spent seriously to oppose it. We encourage electeds and community leaders to take heed of the courage of our supporters and join us in continuing to work together for broad-based economic security and opportunity.
In the end, we believe that the will of the people can overcome the scourge of corporate money and influence in elections. We will continue to fight for a fairer and more just economy for Oregon.”
